first of, please do not use .rtf files for this. Instead use
.txt. rtf files have the tendency to add or change stuff which then
results in undecryptable and unverifyable content.

Could you have your contact send you another test message as
.txt file and try decrypting that?

Also if you want you could post the public key and I could send
another encrypted test message, so we can check if you are able to
decrypt that.

How do I create a .txt file on Mac? I noticed you can't really
change the extensions on files like you can on a PC?

I figured that may be a problem but I was unsure.

So you are saying that for my use this should be possible?

khalid tag:gpgtools.tenderapp.com,2011-11-04:Comment/340836722014-09-03T18:14:02Z2014-09-03T18:14:02ZFirst time user, difficulty importing pub/sec key and decrypting message

Hi Khalid,

if you go to GPG Keychain Access, select your own key and click
"export" you will never receive a .rtf file. It will be an
.asc file and those work just fine.

.rtf file format damages keys and must never be used to transfer
or work with keys in any way.

So once you've received a public key in rtf file format just
delete that key and ask the sender to send a proper key.

Also this whole story shows, why using the key servers is a
smarter idea. So if you can, ask your friend to upload his public
key to the key servers. You'll then be able to import it from there
very easily.

Let me know how this goes,
